Design optimisation for its recyclability
RecyClass Tool has been developed and maintained on the basis of laboratory testing and the expertise of European plastics recyclers. Sometimes it is not possible to provide accurate figures and data with scientific background, therefore we choose to include figures based on our experience.
This tool evaluates the technical recyclability of the packaging given the current best available technology, but does not take into account the efficiency of different collection schemes across Member States.
The RecyClass team has signed a non-disclosure agreement to ensure your product design confidentiality. Any kind of individual communication of the report is strictly prohibited without your previous consent. The anonymised global result of your analysis might be used for statistics purposes.
Is your package generally suitable for this analysis?
The RecyClass tool is only suitable for packaging which:
is made of plastic
is free from hazardous substances
does not consist of bio- or oxo-degradable plastics
Plastic packaging must be detectable using state-of-the-art sorting technology.
The RecyClass Tool defines packaging as made of plastic when:
it consists predominantly of plastics, by weight
more than 50% of the surface is plastic
and if present, an existing aluminium layer is not thicker than 5 μm (in case of a multilayer film).
Your packaging is suitable for this analysis.
Please continue.
Type of packaging
The type of packaging determines the choice of questions in the next part: Design for Recycling Incompatibilities. Whilst oxo- or bio-degradable plastics are principally incompatible with standard polymers in the case of other material combinations, a closer look is needed.
By defining your type of packaging, the tool will attribute the corresponding Design for Recycling Guideline. This attribution is directly linked to the recycling stream, where the packaging will be effectively sorted. To this end, the main polymer that constitutes the packaging (PE, PP, PET, PS, others) must be considered, as well as its shape (rigid, flexible) and its colouration. For the latter, the packaging is considered coloured if any masterbatch is used to colour the main polymer resin (except white) and/or if the decorative technology (e.g., direct printing) entirely covers the packaging surface.

Final result
In Europe, recycling streams have been established for certain polymers and types of packaging. Packaging that can be allocated to one of these streams using the current sorting technologies will be considered suitable for this analysis. Available recycling streams in Europe are:
PET bottles
PET Trays
PE Films
PP Films
PE Containers
PP Containers
PE Crates and Pallets
PP Crates and Pallets
PS Containers
EPS fish boxes
EPS white goods
Based on the information stated above, RecyClass classifies this packaging into CLASS F since no recycling stream is currently available.
More information about PRE recycling streams here.
Final result
As mentioned in a EPBP disclaimer, one of the challenges that PET recyclers face is how to recover the increasing amount of opaque PET bottles, which are more and more used in packaging. A high proportion of opaque PET bottles cannot be recycled into current applications.. Opaque PET that enters the clear/light blue recycling stream will result in a loss of clarity and transparency of the recyclate. Therefore, the quality of the rPET for packaging applications will be reduced.
Sorting opaque PET bottles in their own recycling stream remains an option. However, opaque PET is generally limited to grey or black end-use applications which have a limited market, unless each colour is previously separated.
Based on the information stated above, RecyClass classifies opaque PET bottles into CLASS F since no recycling stream is currently available.
In this area your packaging is checked for its composition. More information can be found in CIRCPACK's Methodology.
The design compatibility process is carried out to establish the amount of recyclable aluminum in the packaging and its ability to replace virgin material in new products. Any non-recoverable material must be considered and removed from the proportion of recyclable aluminum (e.g., plastics, paper, etc.). The class ranking to consider is the following:
Class A X ≥ 95
Class B 90% ≤ X < 95%
Class C 70% ≤ X < 90%
Class D 50% ≤ X < 70%
Class E X < 50%

Part 1 : Recyclable Plastic Content
In this area your packaging is checked for its composition. More information can be found in the RecyClass Recyclability Methodology.
The design compatibility process is carried out to establish the amount of recyclable plastics in the packaging and its ability to replace virgin plastics in new products. Any non-recoverable (non-plastic) materials must be considered and removed from the proportion of recyclable plastics (e.g., inks, EVOH, barriers, adhesives for laminates, fillers, etc.). The class ranking to consider is the following:
Class A X ≥ 95
Class B 90% ≤ X < 95%
Class C 70% ≤ X < 90%

Does your packaging contain any PE component(s) (e.g., closure, label, sleeve)?
All components of the packaging made of plastic and having a PRE recycling pathway must be considered in the proportion by weight: main body, labels, sleeves, closure systems, etc. However, weights of barrier, coating, mineral fillers, adhesive, printing, as well as any non-plastic components must be removed of the proportion.
At this first stage, any additional polyolefin component(s) should be counted in the recycled proportion. A detailed analysis of these components will be conducted in the next part: Design for Recycling Incompatibilities.

INTERIM RESULT:
This class represents the maximal and theorical recyclability class that your packaging can obtain. This result is obtained by mass balance calculation regarding the amount of plastic and non-plastic incorporated in the packaging design. Indeed, the larger the content of one polymer in the packaging, the higher its recyclability rate will be (i.e., the amount of recoverable and valuable plastic recycled).
Part 1 : Recyclable Steel Content
In this area your packaging is checked for its composition. More information can be found in CIRCPACK's Methodology.
The design compatibility process is carried out to establish the amount of recyclable steel in the packaging and its ability to replace virgin material in new products. Any non-recoverable material must be considered and removed from the proportion of recyclable steel (e.g., plastics, paper, etc.). The class ranking to consider is the following:
Class A X ≥ 95
Class B 90% ≤ X < 95%
Class C 70% ≤ X < 90%
Class D 50% ≤ X < 70%
Class E X < 50%
What is the net weight of your packaging?
The net weight of the total package is the first step in calculating the mass balance for the amount of steel and non-steel incorporated in the packaging design.
The weight to be reported in this question corresponds to the weight if the entire pack (full body + attachments + closures, etc.) except for screw caps and capsules where it is only the weight of the cap that should be written (without considering the bottle).
grams
What is the net weight of steel in your packaging?
Maximizing the proportion of the main and preferably unique material is one of the principal requirements in improving the recyclability of packaging and the quality of the final recyclate. Therefore, the larger the content of steel in the packaging, the higher its recyclability rate.

Part 3 : 'Easy-to-empty'/'Easy-to-access' index
These indices indicate the percentage of the product, which after normal use is still in the packaging. They are calculated using the formula on the right.
As prerequisite for industrial & commercial packaging, the presence of residual product content is limited to half by weight relative to the aluminum weight of the packaging. Any packaging with a higher residual content is disqualified, as highly contaminating for the recycling streams. If the packaging meets this first condition, the residual product content must be further calculated to evaluate its impact on the recycling process.
Pe = average weight of empty packaging after normal use
W = weight of a fully empty packaging (without product inside)
Pf = declared net weight of content
Procedure to evaluate the Easy to Empty index for viscous content:
1. Squeeze product with one hand until packaging begins spitting. The packaging should be allowed to breathe.
2. While keeping the packaging inverted: Vigorously shake (with a whipping movement), one time, attempting to move as much product to the orifice of the closure. Squeeze product with one hand until packaging begins spitting. The packaging should be allowed to breathe.
3. Repeat step 2.
4. Repeat after inverted 24 hours, 48 hours; and 72 hours.
Procedure to evaluate the Easy to Empty index for liquid content:
1. Invert the packaging to empty as much content as possible
2. While keeping the packaging inverted: Vigorously shake (with a whipping movement), one time, attempting to move as much product to the orifice of the closure.
Procedure to evaluate the Easy to Empty index for gas content:
1. Evacuate as much content as possible using the trigger return the product (if relevant) and start the operation again
2. Return the product (if relevant) and start the operation again
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until nothing comes out
