Mapping of Recycling Infrastructures in Europe
In order for a packaging to be recycled and to claim its recyclability in practice, it must be captured within a dedicated waste management system established in the geographical area of interest. Plastic waste management systems consist of three main steps – collection, sorting and recycling – that ensure transformation of plastic waste into new valuable products.
A packaging and its design must be compatible with collection, sorting and recycling to claim its recyclability. If incompatible with one the given steps, packaging cannot be properly recycled in the geographical area of interest.
