    Design optimisation for its recyclability

    RecyClass Tool has been developed and maintained on the basis of laboratory testing and the expertise of European plastics recyclers. Sometimes it is not possible to provide accurate figures and data with scientific background, therefore we choose to include figures based on our experience.

    This tool evaluates the technical recyclability of the packaging given the current best available technology, but does not take into account the efficiency of different collection schemes across Member States.

    The RecyClass team has signed a non-disclosure agreement to ensure your product design confidentiality. Any kind of individual communication of the report is strictly prohibited without your previous consent. The anonymised global result of your analysis might be used for statistics purposes.

  • Is your package generally suitable for this analysis?

    The RecyClass tool is only suitable for packaging which:

    • is made of plastic
    • is free from hazardous substances
    • does not consist of bio- or oxo-degradable plastics

    Plastic packaging must be detectable using state-of-the-art sorting technology.

    The RecyClass Tool defines packaging as made of plastic when:

    • it consists predominantly of plastics, by weight
    • more than 50% of the surface is plastic
    • and if present, an existing aluminium layer is not thicker than 5 μm (in case of a multilayer film).

  • Type of packaging

    The type of packaging determines the choice of questions in the next part: Design for Recycling Incompatibilities. Whilst oxo- or bio-degradable plastics are principally incompatible with standard polymers in the case of other material combinations, a closer look is needed.

    By defining your type of packaging, the tool will attribute the corresponding Design for Recycling Guideline. This attribution is directly linked to the recycling stream, where the packaging will be effectively sorted. To this end, the main polymer that constitutes the packaging (PE, PP, PET, PS, others) must be considered, as well as its shape (rigid, flexible) and its colouration. For the latter, the packaging is considered coloured if any masterbatch is used to colour the main polymer resin (except white) and/or if the decorative technology (e.g., direct printing) entirely covers the packaging surface.

    In Europe a stream for PET rigid packaging different from bottles and trays does not exist. Please, check with the RecyClass Sorting Protocol if your PET rigid packaging (cup, pot, tub, etc.) is sorted in the PET bottle or in the PET tray streams in order to assess it for recyclability. PET packaging ending in mixed plastic stream cannot be assessed for recyclability.

      Based on the information stated above, RecyClass classifies this packaging into CLASS F since no recycling stream is currently available.

    • Final result

      As mentioned in a EPBP disclaimer, one of the challenges that PET recyclers face is how to recover the increasing amount of opaque PET bottles, which are more and more used in packaging. A high proportion of opaque PET bottles cannot be recycled into current applications.. Opaque PET that enters the clear/light blue recycling stream will result in a loss of clarity and transparency of the recyclate. Therefore, the quality of the rPET for packaging applications will be reduced.

      Sorting opaque PET bottles in their own recycling stream remains an option. However, opaque PET is generally limited to grey or black end-use applications which have a limited market, unless each colour is previously separated.

      Based on the information stated above, RecyClass classifies opaque PET bottles into CLASS F since no recycling stream is currently available.

      The design compatibility process is carried out to establish the amount of recyclable aluminum in the packaging and its ability to replace virgin material in new products.       This class represents the maximal and theorical recyclability class that your packaging can obtain. This result is obtained by mass balance calculation regarding the amount of plastic and non-plastic incorporated in the packaging design. Indeed, the larger the content of one polymer in the packaging, the higher its recyclability rate will be (i.e., the amount of recoverable and valuable plastic recycled).
